Olivier Babin was trained as an artist and exhibited internationally before founding and running the New York and Brussels based gallery Clearing from 2011 to 2025. Following the gallery’s closure, Babin has returned to making work himself.

 

In a gesture that combines humour, precision, and art-historical awareness, Babin is now producing a new body of paintings that openly reference On Kawara’s date paintings, while simultaneously slipping into the logic of a bespoke sign shop. The project operates under the name Maison Olivier.

 

Each painting is made to order. Names, dates, places, single words, or short phrases can be specified, along with colour choices. The result sits somewhere between conceptual painting, personal marker, and commercial signage—deliberately ambiguous, deadpan, and exact.

 

In 2026 PROVENCE presented a suite of these works at Art Genève.
